Agriculture

From producers to retailers, we help participants in the agricultural commodities value chain confront challenges that stem from their exposure to commodity price risk as well as the complexity that stems from dealing with multiple crop years, varieties, delivery locations and logistics, among other areas.

1

Producers

Producers

Large scale producers in Agribusiness have a problem in which their sale price is exposed to market forces while their input costs from land and equipment lease to land lease, to seeds and crop protection apparatus tend to be fixed. This exposure to the market can be hedged away using various financial instruments such as futures, options and swaps.

We work with clients in this area to develop hedging strategies, manage positions, value physical and financial contracts.

2

Primary and Secondary Processors

Primary and Secondary Processors

Processors deal with volatilities and market risk exposure both on the inputs and outputs sides of their business. The raw commodity (example: Corn) they require as inputs are often exchange traded and the products they make (Corn Meal) are priced against local publications and other forms of market price.

This operating environment requires that processors hedge exposure on both the input and output sides. We help develop and implement processes and systems to help manage various mission-critical operations including contract management, market risk and regulatory report, accounting, settlements, invoices among others.

Storage Service Providers

Storage Service Providers

We help silo owners and storage facility operators implement processes and systems that help track positions across commodities, varieties, customers, locations among other aggregation dimensions. In cases where storage operators take title or own replacement cost liabilities, we help track valuation of physical inventories, variety blends as well the hedge positions taken to mitigate market risk.

4

Packaged Goods Producers

Packaged Goods Producers

The Consumer Packaged Goods or Fast-Moving Consumer Goods industry is exposed to market volatilities that come from price movements in the commodities that go into the production of the goods they sell to consumers.

Price elasticity prevents CPG companies from passing along cost increases to consumers. This transforms procurement and strategic sourcing into a source of competitive advantage. We work companies in this industry vertical to deploy processes and systems designed minimize the impact of market shocks on margins.

Metals

We provide solutions and consulting services to players at every point in the metal commodities value chain, from miners to heavy manufacturers. We help navigate the complexity in their operations by improving business processes and putting fit-for-purpose systems in place and thereby delivering cost savings and productivity gains.

1

Miners

Miners

The mining business is capital intensive. From equipment leases fixed costs to the variable costs of catalysts and water supply, the all-in sustaining costs of metal commodities are high and generally fixed.

The market price is however exposed to price risk fueled by supply and demand and other fundamentals. This price risk calls for sophisticated hedging programs, processes and systems which we help mining companies deploy.

2

Refiners

Refiners

Metal refiners take metal concentrates as input into their refineries and produce refined metals in various shapes, ingots for example. Given the energy intensity of the refining process, refiners must account for market risk associated with the price of electricity and fuels in addition to the volatility of metal prices.

Arriving at a clear picture of PnL, valuation of inventories of concentrates and refined metal and financial hedges for metals and energy requires fit-for-purpose systems and best practice business processes. As experts in Energy and Commodity Trading, we assist refiners in various areas to address common industry challenges.

Traders

Traders

Managing metals trading books across base and precious metals, refined and concentrates and physical and paper trading requires more than spreadsheets and generalist ERP systems can provide.

We have a proven track record of assisting metals traders, such as investment banks with systems and processes to accurately track, value, report on all their trading activity across various types of financial instruments.

4

Industrial Consumers

Industrial Consumers

Industrial consumers of metal commodities need to be able to forecast their metal requirements over a given time horizon and hedge their open positions using long-term physical contracts as well as futures, options and swaps, among other types of hedging mechanisms.

Doing this efficiently across multiple metals with complex pricing formulae, quality adjustments creates challenges that require commodity trading and risk management systems and processes expertise which we possess at Essentia as demonstrated by track records with our various clients.
